Sourdough Breakfast Menu

Simple ways to make everyday mornings feel a little more special

There’s something about sourdough that turns even the simplest breakfast into a moment.

Maybe it’s the time it takes to make it, or the way it fills the kitchen with warmth, or just the quiet pride of slicing into a loaf you made yourself. Whatever it is, sourdough has a way of slowing things down, even on busy days.

These are a few of my favorite easy breakfast ideas using sourdough. Nothing complicated, just simple, cozy meals that feel a little special.

French Toast Bake (Perfect for Busy Mornings)

If you want something that feels like a treat but requires almost no effort in the morning, this is it.

A sourdough French toast bake is soft on the inside, slightly crisp on top, and full of that rich, tangy flavor that makes sourdough so good.

The best part? You can prep it the night before.

Just cube your sourdough, soak it in a simple egg and milk mixture, and let it sit overnight. In the morning, bake it until golden and serve warm.

It’s the kind of breakfast that makes your house smell amazing and feels like you did way more than you actually did.

With just 10 minutes of prep and 30 minutes to bake this is a great recipe for treating your bible study group, brunch with the girls, or your family.

Ingredients

  • 1 loaf, cubed

  • 1 1/2 cups milk

  • 1/2 cup cream

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

  • 10 eggs

  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

TOPPING

  • 1/3 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/3 cup brown sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/3 cup butter, softened

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and grease a 9 inch by 13 inch baking dish. Cut the loaf of sourdough bread into 1-inch cubes, placing the bread cubes in the prepared dish.

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, cream, sugar, eggs, cinnamon, and vanilla.

  • Pour the egg mixture over the top of the bread and allow it to stand for 10 – 15 minutes. If letting it sit overnight, finished the next two steps and then cover and place in the fridge.

  • Prepare the topping by whisking the flour, sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a small mixing bowl. Add the softened butter and combine with a fork or pastry cutter until crumbly.

  • Spread the topping evenly over the top of the casserole.

  • Bake for 45 – 55 minutes until the middle is set and the top is golden brown. Check for an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Serve with a drizzle of maple syrup, organic honey, whipped cream, or powdered sugar.

Toast with Local Jam + Honey

Sometimes simple really is best.

A thick slice of toasted sourdough with butter, a spoonful of local jam, and a drizzle of honey is one of those breakfasts that never gets old. If you meet us at our stand on Saturdays with the Corpus Christi Farmers market, there are lots of options for jams and honey all in one convenient location. Everything sold there is made locally! It makes this a little more special and helps support makers and farmers in the community.

Adding jam and honey is a quick, comforting, and easy to customize depending on what you have on hand.

Jalapeño Cheddar Breakfast Sandwich

This one is for the mornings when you want something hearty and filling. This is one of my favorite ways to use Jalapeno Cheddar bread.

A slice of jalapeño cheddar sourdough toasted and stacked with a fried (or scrambled) egg and crispy bacon is hard to beat.

The slight spice from the jalapeño, the richness of the cheese, and the tang of the sourdough all come together in the best way.

It’s simple, satisfying, and feels like something you’d order at a café made by you!

Making Sourdough Part of Your Routine

Breakfast doesn’t have to be complicated to feel special.

Having a loaf of sourdough on hand makes it easy to throw together something warm, comforting, and homemade... even on busy mornings.

Whether it’s a quick piece of toast or a slow weekend bake, sourdough has a way of turning everyday moments into something a little more meaningful.

I hope this inspires you to get creative and make meals more intentional by using homemade or locally sourced ingredients. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day after all!

Best Wishes,
